I have finally decided to attempt to record a concert off of Radio margaritaville.

It is my understanding that the process is to record the entire concert as a single wave file and then go back and break it up into seperate tracks.

I assume you need to record about 3 hours worth of time. How big does that file end up being? I am unsure of whether I have enough space on my harddrive.

Sounds like you have the process right.

The uncut file will be about 1.6 GB or so. Once you've cut intermission and some of the encore dead time you should end up around 1.2/1.3.

Those numbers are using 44.1/16 bit/Stereo settings on Total Recorder.

I noticed that a large part of my Harddrive was "eaten up" by using the wav format.

I thought about burning the file(s) temporarily on to CD (to free up space) and dice it up later.

Senator or anyone else, can total recorder or CD Wave split up the wav files from a cd or must it be on your hard drive first? Otherwise, won't one have about 2.5 - 3 gig tied up with each concert? Thanks

You can use Total Recorder to record as MP3. That is usually 160MB. That uses less space until you get ready to track it and burn the CD.

I guess I've never thought about doing it that way.. do you lose any quality recording as mp3 vs wav??

I tried MP3 for the Cincy (6/18)show and the quality was lousy (noisy). I tried wav for the Tinley park show (6/22) and it sounded much much better.

I attributed the difference to the compression but I guess it could have been the feed was simply better on Saturday.

I always record to MP3. The quality is great if you record at 256kBit/s, 44,100Hz.

3 1/2 hrs ends up being about 400mb.

How do you record to MP3. The total recorder I have will not allow it. It says I need some scepial "codec"

I admit that I am not versed enough to know what that means.

Go to TR website and read the info about installing a MP3 codec. They have links and instructions how to. If you are using WinXP I think it will use the one that comes with Windows.
