FTP Tutorial: How to download from jokelben and Sunlover FTP sites

Many BNers have asked how to use FTP to download the shows. Several have asked about jokelben and what it is or how to access it. I created this updated tutorial on how to setup and use Filezilla to download an entire show in just a few clicks. Filezilla is free and is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Download and install the Filezilla FTP client, then follow this easy guide to setup the program. The file size is 4-5 MB, depending on the version you download.

Filezilla Download Page
Available for:
Image Windows XP/Vista/7 (32-bit & 64-bit)
Image Mac OS X (10.5 or higher)
Image Linux

Hopefully, the Mods can sticky this post for a while.

Image
Filezilla Main Window
This is the main window when you launch Filezilla. To start setting up your FTP sites, click on the Site Manager button in the upper left corner.

Image
Site Manager Dialog Box
Click the New Site button to begin setting up the logon information.

Image
Site Manager Setup
In the "New Site" box, type Jokelben, then press Enter. If you are setting up access to the SunLover site, type Sunlover.
(You can name these anything you want).

Image
Site Manager Setup (continued)
On the right side of the dialog box, you need to enter the Host Name, User Name, and Password. You will also need to select the Logon Type as "Normal".
The screenshot above shows the information to access the jokelben site.
Use the information below for the logon information.

User Logon Information
(Posted as an image so Google can't crawl the logon info)

Image
Filezilla Main Window with Jokelben in Site Manager
Now when you click on the little “Down Arrow” on the Site Manager button, Jokelben will appear. Just click on it to connect. To setup the Sunlover site,
just repeat the steps above, but use the logon information for Sunlover (aka cuebas). Just click the Site Manager button to start setting up the other FTP site.

Image
Connected to Jokelben Site
When you connect to either Jokelben or Sunlover, your computer harddrive(s) will appear on the left pane. The FTP folders will appear in the right pane.

Image
Select The Shows to Download
To download the entire show in one click, just Right Click and select Download on the show folder you want. Filezilla will begin downloading the shows
to the harddrive you selected on the left pane.

Image
Download Progress Pane
As the files are downloading, they will appear in the bottom pane with the download progress bar. As each file completes, it will drop off the Queued Files list.
When you are done downloading, click on Server > Disconnect or press Ctrl + D to disconnect from the server.

Screenshots were made from Filezilla ver 3.4.0

Frequently Asked Questions

What is FTP?
FTP stands for File Transfer for Parrotheads. Wait, that should be Featherhead Transfer Protocol. Hmm, that's not right. It is an easy way to transfer files to or from a server and your computer. You use a folder or Windows Explorer style view instead of a web browser to download files. You can transfer individual files or entire folders in just a few clicks.

Connectivity Issues: Filezilla can connect but gives me an error message.
If Filezilla tries to connect to the FTP site but fails, you may have entered the user information incorrectly. Double check the site name, user name and password. All the fields should be all lowercase.

Connectivity Issues: Filezilla can't connect at all.
Your firewall may be blocking internet access to Filezilla. Most firewalls should automatically configure rules and allow Filezilla online access. Check your firewall to make sure Filezilla is on the Allowed Applications list.

Help! I accidentally deleted a file or folder from the FTP site!
If you deleted a file from the FTP site, you may owe a cheeseburger to everyone trying to download that show. If you deleted the folder, you also owe everyone a round of margaritas. :D Just send a PM to SunLover and let me know what show(s) or file(s) you believe may be missing. We should be able to repost the file(s) and make arrangements to collect the margaritas and burgers from you.

Can I browse the FTP site with a browser?
Yes, you can browse and download files with your web browser. The only drawback is you can only download one file at a time. The jokelben FTP can be browsed at http://buffett.jokelben.us/. The Sunlover FTP site can be browsed at http://cuebas.net/buffett/.

I already use a different FTP client. Do I have to use Filezilla?
You can use any FTP client you prefer. I have been recommending Filezilla for new FTP users because it is free, easy to setup, free, available for several platforms (Win, Mac, Linux), and it’s free (not sure if I mentioned that). My main intention here was to provide the logon information that often gets buried deep in the forums.

What are the advantages of FTP?
Glad you asked! You can get the entire show by downloading the show's folder. You can download more than one show at a time by adding several show folders to the download queue. The downloads are fast (depending on your connection). You also avoid any dead links due to coding errors when I post the http download links for web users (Coding errors? That never happens here!)

What are any disadvantages of FTP?
There are a couple disadvantages. Many people prefer a web interface to download content versus using the folder view. Also, it is too easy for users to modify files either by deleting or renaming them.

Why is there a logon and password?
In some cases, the FTP owner has to have a dedicated server or a higher level of web hosting to run anonomous FTP, so they setup an easy user/pass for you to use. Also, the specific user/pass combination may send the user to a specific folder instead of the root folder, as is the case for the Sunlover site.

What is the air speed velocity of an unladen swallow?
What do you mean, African or European?

My download stopped before it was finished. What happened?
There are several possibilities here. Your connection may have been interrupted. The FTP server may have gone down. The FTP owner may be doing maintenance and some files may have been moved or deleted. If this happens, stop the download and refresh the folder view. Or try the download again later.

I hope this information helps. If you have any questions or suggestions for this thread, please feel free to post.

Hey Mods, could we please STICKY this post so it is easy for folks to find in the future? This answers (in great detail) one of the most asked questions in this forum.

Hey SL...what is the next step if I can see the folders but download isn't an option. It works at home, so I imagine it is a firewall thing.

Nevermind...up and running like a beaut. I am thinking, much like me, it needed more coffee.

Thanks so much for putting this up. It really helps those of us who are tech-challenged. :-)

Thank you so much for the tutorial! I was using a browser to download a few at a time and occasionally missing part of the file. Great work! 8)

For those who use Firefox as thier browser, there is a free ftp add on called Fireftp available from Mozilla. This add on adds ftp capability to the Firefox browser and eliminates the need for having both a browser and an ftp client on your computer.

Thanks for letting it "stick" around for a while. I also tried to make it as search friendly as possible so when it does start to drop down, peeps can still find it.

If you can see the folders, the firewall is not blocking the download. It's possible that a proxy at w*rk may be blocking the file type (.mp3) from being downloaded. Or ya just need something a bit stronger than coffee to get the downloads.

I know there are plugins for Firefox and I should have mentioned that. Thanks for adding this info. From my web host stats, Internet Explorer is still the most popular browser with FF as a close second place. The good thing is Filezilla is a small app that does not take a lot of resources to run.

The airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow is roughly 11 meters per second, or 24 miles per hour*, beating
its wings 7-9 times per second (rather than 43). But please note that a 5 ounce bird cannot carry a one pound coconut.

*Based upon published species-wide averages of wing length and body mass, initial Strouhal estimates based
on those averages and cross-species comparisons, the Lund wind tunnel study of birds flying at a range of
speeds, and revised Strouhal numbers based on that study gives an estimate that the average cruising airspeed
velocity of an unladen European Swallow is roughly 11 meters per second, or 24 miles per hour.

I use this FTP add on exclusively and can vouch for it's usefulness as a Firefox user (especially since there is FINALLY a Firefox 4 version!).

I don't mean to laugh but that is soooooo something I would do. I can see myself trying to restore 1 file from a tape backup, only to restore the whole hard drive from like 6 months ago.
