I do have to ask though, how does he win this award without any air time?

The gerneral public doesn't know his name. What qualifications are needed to win this award?

It's an award voted on by CMA peers and isn't song specific,
rather it is for a base of the work done during the previous year.
It is also instrument based (Mac is in for his guitar work).

Category 10 - MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR

This Award is for a musician known primarily as an instrumental performer.
In order to qualify, a musician must have played on at least one album or single
that has appeared in the Top 10 of the Country album or singles charts from
Billboard’s Hot Country Singles & Tracks Chart, Music Row Country Breakout Chart
or Country Aircheck Chart during the eligibility period. Award to musician.
