Streaming Margaritaville TV to a flat screen TV

Post by urlcenter »

Now that Jimmy's show can watched online thanks to Margaritaville TV, I thought I would post information on how to stream Margaritaville TV from a PC or Laptop to flat screen TV.

There are a couple of different methods depending on what type of computer you are receiving Margaritaville TV on, by type of computer I mean Apple vs. Windows computers.

During the broadcast from Austin Texas last Saturday night a photo was posted to the show's set list discussion showing the concert being viewed on a flat screen TV. The person who posted the photo explained that he was streaming the concert from a Mac Power-book computer to his TV using an Apple TV box attached to the TV. Apple TV is one of several set top devices that allow streaming media to be viewed on a flat screen TV. Other similar set top devices included the Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Samsung Smart Media Player, Google Chrome Cast and others.

The Apple TV method described in the Austin set list thread worked quite well based on the photo posted to the thread, the one drawback is that the Apple TV devices costs $100.

Another less expensive method is to used Google Chrome Cast which costs just $35 dollars and is very easy to use. The Chrome Cast device is the size of a flash drive and plugs into an HDMI slot on a flat screen TV. The only other thing you need to have is the Chrome Cast App which can be downloaded and sets up very easy. Margaritaville TV live broadcasts are being streamed over YouTube which the Chrome Cast is pre-configured to stream to flat screen TV's.

I used Chromecast. Very easy setup ... I rarely use the Chrome browser
(I prefer Firefox), so I just just setup a separate window for the broadcast,
sent it to my TV, and then saved my PC screen real estate for my usual Firefox browsing.

I love the $35 Chromecast option. I have been using that for about 6 months now.

I also had the video playing on a iPad for when I went to the kitchen for beer and snacks.

I have never figured out how to flip from margaritavill.tv on my ipad to my appletv. It always went dead. Do you have the steps to do that? Thanks!

For the price, Chromecast can't be beat. Doesn't do everything the others do, or at least perhaps not quite as intuitively, but you get a lot of bang for your buck and re learning curve isn't bad. I got one for $35 and a second refurb one for $25. Have seen Black Friday deals today for $15 and I believe I saw it's only $10 at Costco for BF.

All iOS devices can stream streaming content via AppleTv. When you are in a video or mp3, if you see on the bottom right a TV icon (See icon below) Image

Press it and from there it will allow you to select your apple tv and bam its then sent to the Apple TV.

OK, here's a question for all you techno-geeks .....

When I want to stream video from my laptop to the TV, I just use an HDMI cable. Other than the fact that it's not wireless, am I lacking any other "wizardry" by not using one of the gizmos listed above?

No, not really. The only thing you are lacking is all the various forms of wireless displays and that really is common.
