Hypothetical Jimmy "Top Ten" Tour Stops

Post by PeoriaTom »

This is inspired by a topic I saw on Jimmy's "Big Four" and also all the time we spend on the Tour Dates and Rumors subforum hoping, wishing and waiting. :D When the sad day finally comes that Jimmy decides to hang it up and only do one more tour, what are the ten tour stops you are most confident will get a show??

Unfortunately, I don't get to many concerts. The outdoor venues are the best1

This thread assumes Jimmy is going to decide to hang it all up one day. It is always possible that the venues he still plays are going to make the decision(s) for him. There are still hundreds of tickets available for every single concert on this tour. You can go to the show on Thursday for $29.00. And that is not a resale price. That is buying a regular ticket through TicketScalper. Even the Jones Beach and Mansfield shows have tons of tickets.

I would expect that at some point these venues are going to turn him away in favor of other acts that sell-out or offer him nights that just do not work for him (like a Sunday or Monday).

But I do hope he rides it out long enough to see what happens.

His show at PNC in NJ this year is sold out and has been for months.

Cincy... because that is where it all started
Boston... probably the biggest contingent of fans (Northeast)
Jones Beach......Because it's on the water , and NY metro area population
Alpine ……… A Midwest favorite that attracts from all over
Tampa...…… I just love the venue , and the tailgate
6-10 can be a lot of places , in no particular order , but , no arena's.

I agree with jbfins, Buffett's been having a tough time selling out a lot of the traditional venues the last few years. But I'll play along anyway and make a list. Only places I've seen him and in no particular order:
Jones Beach
Great Woods
Pittsburgh (one of my favorite places to see Buffett, even if it is a pain in the a$$ getting into the parking lot)
Tampa
Frisco
Las Vegas (only because it's Vegas and it's the first place I ever traveled out of NY to see a Buffett concert)
Waikiki Shell
Boise (because both times he played there the temperature was 35-40 degrees and we tailgated anyway )
Seattle (or someplace else in that part of the country so people out there don't have to get on a plane to see him)
for #10, maybe someplace he's never, or rarely, played so all the entitled people who get skipped over once every 15 years have something to b**** and moan about

I've been to Alpine twice but I'm leaving it off my list, it's one of my least favorite venues. I don't know why so many people wet their pants when they talk about that dump, I'd rather see him in a basketball arena.

Basing mine off of nostalgia and the places that have loved Jimmy the longest, hoping he’d reward them with one final stop:

Cincinnati (birthplace of “Parrothead”)
Atlanta (Jimmy talks about it in the same breath as Cincy and kind of predated Cincinnati)
Mansfield, MA (has the most shows played, IIRC)
Burgettstown, PA (longtime hotbed)
Las Vegas (Jimmy seems to love playing there, so he’d definitely pick it)
Houston, TX (TX show plus a lot of history)
Tampa, FL (need a FL show)
Chula Vista, CA or Mountain View, CA (West Coast show)
Bristow, VA (VA/DC/MD show)
Alpine Valley (lots of history plus draws from Chicago)
Past Concerts:

I think the bigger question is IF he decided to call his shot & say THIS IS the farewell tour, do the old timers who decided once the non lawn seats hit triple digits a number of years ago & decided enough was enough go back.......one......more.........time.... [smilie=noeyedear-shrugging.gif]

If he ever does a farewell tour. I'm guessing , with the ticket demand. I could see it being a Stadium show , in certain cities. Or he plays multiple dates in a city like Boston for example.

That's my biggest question. Would the demand rival that of back in the day. Mid 90's here in Michigan 2 years of 3 shows wrapped around the 4th of July. Could that be semi-duplicated??
Stadium show....... :x

If he does decide to do a farewell tour, I hope he doesn't do multiple shows in any city. Spread it around and give the largest number of people an opportunity to see a show. I'm lucky, I'm retired so I have nothing but free time and I have more money than brains so I can travel to a show, or shows, if I want to. For a variety of reasons - money, work, family - a lot of people can't do that. Give them a chance.

I don't foresee Jimmy "retiring" at all. It seems even in interviews he has always had the mindset of Willie and answers "retire from what?"

He has scaled back his tour a lot so I think thats his way of "retiring." He still gets to travel and do all his hobbies and this amount of shows allows him to stay in shape and still be relevant to his fans. I think easily he can tour another 10-15 years

Willie Nelson plays a lot more shows per year but in smaller venues. I also think he has a larger base of fans to draw from. That seems to be why he can last as long as he has. If Jimmy played smaller venues and altered the vibe a little (less drinking-more dope smoking?) I think he could follow a similar path.

But I just do not see him selling out Jones Beach in 3- 5 years on a Tuesday night. Heck, he can't do it for Thurs and they won't give him Saturday night. Plus, it seems to me like more and more people are just going for the party.

I doubt we will ever get a "Lovely Cruise/Farewell Fins" tour and frankly I hope we never do. BUT, if he does ever know that he is done, he MUST play:

Atlanta (I would fly down for it)
Key West
Central Park (the big one in the middle of Manhattan)... for free
Fenway
Wrigley
Vegas
Cincinnati
Hawaii
Antarctica - I am only half kidding. But it would be a hilarious self promotion. And think he said he wanted to visit all the continents.

And not go get off topic too much, we always talk about Jimmy, but what about the band members? Some of them are no spring chickens either. If Jimmy did do a farewell tour, I would be much less inclined to go if I did not know most or all of the band.

RE: Jimmy’s declining ticket sales, are there specific venues you guys are referring to? I have seen him at Wrigley and Des Moines recently, and my sister saw him the last time he was in Noblesville. All have been full. Looks like he drew great crowds in Tulsa and Little Rock, too, and the big stops like Atlanta, Cincinnati, Mansfield, etc. always look full.

I don’t doubt they’ve declined, but Jimmy still seems like a pretty safe bet for a venue.

I think jimmy is still doing well enough to play anywhere. I think its a real tribute to JB and his fan base that he has gone as long as he has already. Also for the most part the shows aren't tanking, just not totally sold out. I think the truth is lots of groups are having the same type results. JB's fan base while aging with him, are still very loyal and appreciate that he is a real life living troubadour! Best of all "he ours"!
