He Went To Paris

How much do you know about Jimmy? There's probably something you don't know.

Before he does the song on You had to be there, he says the song was written about Jesse Bartholmeu and Eddie Balchlaskie. I know those last names are spelled wrong, but that's who it was about. :D

There's a video of this song on JB's "Tales From Margaritavision". It's a pretty sad video. GREAT song though.

Actually I think Bartholemue is the old wino down in New Orleans and the other guy is from Chicago...from my recollection on You Had to Be There, it is just about those two guys...

He also says on there that this song is one of HIS favorites.

I don't know who the three people are, but the song breaks my heart every time I hear it. It's a tear-jerker, for sure.

a quote from the book that comes with "Boats Bars BEaches Ballads"
" Chicago is where I truly cut my teeth as a performer, working as the opening act at the Quiet Knight. I opened for a variety of people from Neil Sadaka to Bob Marley, and when I got frustrated with the crowds, the old one-armed clean-up man with the big German Shepherd always consoled me. It took me a few days of asking to find out that Eddie was more than a janitor. He was a gifted painter and a wonderful pianist. He would stay up after the club closed, and he would sing me songs from the Spanish Civil War where he had fought as a member of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade against the Fascists. Eddie Balchowsky was indeed an inspiration. He was larger than life, and as Mark Twain said, "he'd gone out into the terrirtory". This song is a tribute to his spirirt."

Fall semester in a Southern college town has little to do with studying and more to do with football and fraternity rush. I didn't know much about the football team. Hell at that time I was really an Ole Miss fan and to this day I still cant figure out why I didn’t enroll at the U of Mississippi-JB

It was written for and inspired by both Jessie Barthalomew of NOLA and Eddie Balchowsky.
