Strait, Jackson and Buffett team up at Texas Stadium

IRVING – If you're going to put Alan Jackson, George Strait and Jimmy Buffett on the same bill, making it a one-of-a-kind shindig, you might as well have them sing in each other's set. You know, like good friends crashing each other's parties.

The crowning moment, of course, was during the encore of Mr. Buffett's headlining gig when he played his new single, a remake of Hank Williams' chestnut "Hey, Good Lookin' " featuring Mr. Jackson and Mr. Strait. It was a fun, laid-back and slightly off-kilter performance.

That was the tail-end scene Saturday night during the trio of superstars' sold-out music extravaganza at Texas Stadium. But it sure wasn't the only example of set hopping. These guys were doing it all through the day.

• Mr. Strait moseyed into Mr. Jackson's show to croon "Designated Drinker." Mr. Buffett also paid a visit during "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere," the pair's monster hit duet.

• Mr. Jackson turned up in Mr. Strait's concert to sing "Murder on Music Row" with the Texan. Then, Mr. Buffett arrived to participate in "All My Exes Live in Texas," one of Mr. Strait's signature tunes.

• Mr. Jackson walked on the platform during Mr. Buffett's program to help the chief Parrothead out on a cover of Guy Clark's "Boats to Build." A little later, Mr. Strait came on and they sang "Sea of Heartbreak."

As for the individual shows, here's a rundown:

When Mr. Jackson launched into his cover of Eddie Cochran's "Summertime Blues," you could feel his pain just as you enjoyed the song. His opening stint caught the brunt of the late afternoon sun. Before long, the lanky Georgia native was drenched in perspiration. Even sitting down for his absorbing take on Hank Williams' "The Blues Man" didn't help.

But like the pro he is, Mr. Jackson never let it show. He delivered a confident set filled with staples of his 14-year career, from "Don't Rock the Jukebox" to "Where I Come From," which featured dancing from the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.

Mr. Strait didn't have the girls dressed in blue and white during his gig, but he proved to be solid as usual. King George never lets you down. He dipped into oldies – "The Fireman," "Unwound," "Does Fort Worth Cross Your Mind?" – and tapped into cuts from last year's Honkytonkville.

Of particular note, though, are two of Mr. Strait's best singles of the last three years. First, there's "Run," the sexiest, sultriest country ballad ever recorded. Then, "Tell Me Something Bad About Tulsa," one of those slow-burn tunes that wash all over you.

As for Mr. Buffett – in his usual T-shirt, shorts and no shoes – he and his Coral Reefer Band had a blast on that platform. He did the classics – "Cheeseburger In Paradise," "Fins," "Brown Eyed Girl," "Son of a Son of a Sailor" and "Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes."

He was pumped up, especially during the encore rendition of "Margaritaville," when Mr. Jackson and Mr. Strait couldn't help but come back to the stage. By then, the crowd was in a suntanned frenzy. That's the ultimate Parrothead compliment.

It was a great event, and a hell of a show.

What was most noteable about it was just what a good time JB was obviously having. And Hey Good Lookin alone was worth the price of admission.

But having really wanted to hear Cuban Crime of Passion and If the Phone Doesn't Ring It's Me, well, as much as an "event" as it was...

it wasn't Buffett concert fix.

Guess I'll have to go back to Chicago.

Aw, he sang "Great Filling Station Holdup".....that's one of my top three favorite songs. Ya'll were actually able to TAILGATE? *shock*

Maybe this big-venue thingie might not be so horrible, if you can tailgate in good fashion!

The last song was one super cover of Willis Alan Ramsey's Northest Texas Women.

The Coral Reefer Band nailed it. I can just imagine how much fun that song was to learn. Jimmy nailed the lyrics too. It is such a fantastic little known Texas song, Jerry Jeff Walker and Todd Snider have covered.

Thanks to everyone who posted what they knew about the show. Everything looks just as posted. The setlist was a pure Texas pleaser.

I sat in a group from Mississippi, Kansas, Oklahoma, Corpus Chrisit, TX, Nacadoches, TX, San Marcos, Texas, Sherman, TX.

You would not believe how great the crowd was and how HUGE!

Tailgating was the max! What a long show. I hate to say it, as much as I enjoyed it, I was finally READY for it to end.

More later!

My favorites of the night, of course, were Sea of Hearbreak with George (which Jimmy credited Don Gibson), Boat to Build with Alan with credit to Guy Clark.

Jimmy sang so pretty!!! LOL

What a voice! I have never heard him sing so well in concert. He coughed a bit between songs and drank water. I was happy his voice was THERE, cause I had my doubts at one point.

Venue gets a C-...but the performance an A+++++

Tailgating was hot, but great. A+

Becky, I told my sis that we really needed to meet you, but no one introduced me to a Becky. WE stopped by Four Play and CRC's are a couple times. We tried to walk around and take it all in!

Let's go see Jerry Jeff sometime!

One more little note. Pirate Looks at Forty was special. Amy looked so beautiful. The sound on her part was a little low for us and she looked frustrated for a bit there.

Jimmy guitar playing on PLA40 was awesome.

Jim Mayer was so much fun to watch for some reason during this show. He smiled and seemed to enjoy the show more than anyone on the stage.

The heat must have been brutal for them. They seemed to all be sweated wet....as were all of us on the floor!

Alan came out to sing with Jimmy in a sleeveless orange t with a pirate on it that asked...

got rum? He seemed to be more interested in his cup on Hey Good Lookin than the lyrics!!!! He was great!

George was as much a showman as I HAVE ever seen him. At the end of Hey Good Lookin, he threw his hat into the crowd. I'm sure that caused a feeding frenzy!

Jimmy's hair sure has grown longer; he looked so healthy in spite of the coughing!

Tina and Nadirah really have to have been in good shape to dance in the hot like that and still sing so well. It was good to see Tina play guitar some too.

One more little thing I heard! We sat in section C row 29. Almost everybody that said anything in that area commented that they paid above face value for tickets on ebay. They wanted to make sure they had tickets! A couple people said they got section C off ticketmaster on Friday. They said they were just gonna take their chances and if they didn't get tickets, they wouldn't have cared. They left early!

One group of girls hardly ever sat during the first 3 hours, because it seemed two people sat in their places and wouldn't move. Security finally came and removed the two folks and the girls could finally sit down, but THEY didn't sit long. They were so much fun to watch.

I think people sat only because they were worn out!

Well girl, I know what you mean about taking it all in! We needed more time tailgating - although cutting it short was probably helpful towards making the mile trek to the stadium in that heat!

I'm glad you made it there OK, that's the main thing. We prolly saw each other and just didn't connect

Did you get any Jello shots?
The concert was fabulous!!! I have a new appreciation for George Strait after seeing him live. WOW! He's still got it going on!!

Get up here next Saturday and help us give tailgating lessons to the parrothead-tailgater wannabes at the Kenny Chesney show. The summer phun season has just begun! We'll definitely have to scheme up a phlocking somewhere - how far are you from Big D?

Yeah, he did seem to be having fun. I loved the version of Changes, and it was a treat to get Great Filling Station Hold Up. That and Pascagoula Run, I thought, were thrown in there for us. I figured he would play the popular hits at this one because of the crowd mixture. I had a great time, but would also have loved to see some of the more, shall we say, classic lesser known ballads. I would love to hear Remittance Man, and yeah, If the Phone Doesn't Ring It's Me would be awsome.
