Leaving on a Jet Plane Thursday @ the MSC

Post by SMLCHNG »

Good morning!

My sister will be here in about an hour to pick up me, Cameron, and Sarah. Save on parking for the few days.

While I love E's family, I'm just not ready for the services on Saturday.

Hope you have a great day!! :)

In my teens and twenties I used to crew rescue jet boats.

We always sang the song as
"I'm leaving on a jet boat.
Don't know if it will stay afloat".

Back in the day, in New South Wales, the two major breweries were Tooheys and Tooths.

The boat was sponsored by Tooheys and the tow vehicle was sponsored by Tooths!

We had the best of both worlds!

I apologise to the non-boaters...

Bill,

The design came from yet another day when the early jet rescue boat designs, again, failed miserably in big surf. On a "screaming green meanie" which is a large wave in the surf zone that is just starting to curl over at the top to break, the leading face is very steep and the wave is at its most powerful and energetic. The steepness and power resulted in many of the early boats either going too vertical and tumbling backwards (pitchpolling) or if the skipper gave it too many revs it would be launched into the big empty space behind the wave.

On a 10ft wave the drop was in the order of 12 to 15ft. Much damage was done to equipment and crew. On bigger waves it was even worse. The biggest seas I ever did a rescue in the surf zone were over 20ft.

The anecdote is that after one such event, while dewatering both the boat and the 351 V8 engine in the shed, on TV was a documentary that showed Killer Whales (Orcas) breaching. Someone said that looks like what we should do. Thus the bow shape was designed.

In a big surf rather than trying to power over the wave and getting airborne, with this bow you would power about half or two-thirds up the face then lift your right foot off the throttle which would bury the bow into the face of the wave. Then about 2 seconds later your right foot was slammed to the deck to harness every single one of the horses in the engine bay.

Because the bow was buried in the wave, the boat would punch through to the back of the wave and would then slide down the back rather than flying and landing with a crunch.

More than one rescued patient had the bejesus scared out of them as we submerged and burst out...

I first did this when I was about fourteen years old and I was hooked.

Good evening from Oklahoma!

My sister picked us up this morning to drive to the airport...so I wouldn't have to pay for parking. :)

When Cameron and Sarah went to go get some food, Cameron came back and looked at me and asked me what was wrong with my eye?? Broken blood vessel it seems, and it looks f'ugly!!!

Flight was a FEW minutes late on departure, but they made up time. Luggage fine, picked up car (what I reserved they didn't have, asked me if I wanted a minivan?  Uh, no. So I got a Volkswagon Jetta. Nice drive.

Had dinner with E's Mom, brother, and SIL. Nice time, but we were so tired, and don't eat dinner at 6:00. But the food was VERY yummy!!

Hotel parking and check in was fine.

Thank you all for the good thoughts.. [smilie=hearts.gif] [smilie=hearts.gif]

Hope to fall asleep soon'ish..

EDIT: my eyeball... it's looking a LITTLE bit better now, and isn't blocking my vision, doesn't hurt, so that's good.

Whoa! I would love to punch a big wave on purpose in a boat designed for it.

I was on Lake Erie in a 20-foot bass boat doing 35 mph when we punched a wave. Everything went through the tat wave except our heads. The bilge pump drained the swamped rig and the motor sputtered back to life! We were soaked, but it was warm, plus, it wasn't my boat.
