Fun tickets In My Pocket Tuesday @ the MSC

Post by SMLCHNG »

Good morning, BN! :)

A little cooler this morning at 55 degrees, rather than 75, which we have been. But there are a lot smoky skies.

Not much on my agenda today.

Have a good Tuesday!! :D

Hey Penny !!

We got RAIN......our new rain gauge says about 4"......

Nothing on our agenda today except my "Flavor it Up" class at the library. This month is turnips. The only turnips I have had were mashed and seasoned with whatever made them taste just like mashed potatoes.

I still haven't tackled Lincoln's fingerprints :)

Hope everyone has a great day.

We have chocolate chip cookies! Three young men are installing the generator. They killed the power for 2.5 hours, but it's back on.
If I wasn't fishing in this all day rain,I'd be home doing something stupid.

Mmmmm cookies!
We're back home from our rather dichotomic trip to the Bay Area.
The first part of our trip to SJC was for MrsSPH’s 98 yo mother, who lives in a “senior living community” in Mountain View. (When I first met MrsSPH, her father’s aunt lived there until she passed away at 95, and then my MIL’s aunt lived there until she passed at 92, and then my MIL’s mother lived there until she passed at 99. (There's some longevity in that family!))
The community has two buildings, an independent living side and an assisted living side. My MIL lived in a 1 bedroom apartment in the independent living side for 14 years until last year after she had a UTI that resulted in an ambulance ride to the ER and what turned into septis. Kathleen and her four siblings all gathered bedside for what they thought was a final visit with her, but skilled medical care and lots of antibiotics did their job and she had a full recovery. After that episode, all 5 siblings agreed she would be better off if she moved from her apartment over to the assisted living side (MIL calls it “Heaven’s Waiting Room.”) She’s had two more ambulance rides to the ER since (the last one on the 4th of July) and hasn’t quite recovered.) One part of our trip was to transition her into Hospice Care.

The other part of our trip was far more joyous… we were there to help set up and celebrate a baby shower for our she-‘keet [smilie=battingeyes.gif] Nicole, who is expecting our first grandchild (granddaughter) on October 12th. The shower was held at her home, so we went down to help get the house all spiffed up and decorated for the event. It was girls only, so one of Nicole’s cousins, my SIL Matt, and I had to make ourselves scarce for several hours, but Jake’s Whiskey Bar is just a couple of blocks from their house and we found a way to while away our time there.

So we’re back home now, and gearing up for this weekend, when we’re hosting another baby shower, this time for the Seattle area friends and family of the expectant pair. This one is gonna be for boys and girls, so I actually get to participate.

This whole baby shower thing is waaaay different than it was back in the olden times when we were having babies!

Coincidently, this is one of Nicole's favorite JB songs, it brings back memories of the two of us singing along to it numerous times while driving somewhere in the car.....

Wow -- that's a lot going on. We know the aging parents/inlaws situation and are sending you good thoughts and prayers. The decisions needing to be made as things progress doesn't get any easier.

Congrats on the upcoming 1st grandbaby's arrival. And yes, the baby showers "these days" are quite different. (like bachelor/ette parties that are now weekend destination parties).

This makes me so sad. The apartments that E, Cameron, and I used to live in had a fire yesterday. Cameron noticed the buildings looked familiar.
We lived at 16253 E. Alameda Place, and the fire was at 16203 :( :( 50 people displaced.

Well, it's early Wednesday morning. I've checked the obits and my name wasn't there, so that's good news.

We have been talking about trading in my 11 year old Mitsubishi ute for a Plug-In Hybrid Electric (PHEV) ute. We test drove one a few days ago. Geebus it was comfy and QUICK. Scary fast. No 4wd ute has the right to have that much acceleration!

We went to see our financial adviser to work out if the new ute was doable. After running some numbers it seems that if we buy it (I am a self-funded retiree) then I will become eligible for a government pension at 90 years old instead of 93. It's a risk I am willing to take.

We asked about the process to transfer the money from the pension fund into our bank account and the adviser said she would just go and get her assistant to print the form. Apparently, the fund has changed the software to do that and the assistant hadn't seen the new software. So she accidentally approved the transfer instead of printing the form  Oh well it cut out some paperwork!

We then dropped by the car yard and did the paperwork there. It was an odd system. One is supposed to order the vehicle online, then visit the dealer who checks the order and suggests the usual up-sell. You could actually do the whole thing online and select "click and collect"! Well we decided to make him do the order so he does something to earn his commission!

So we have ordered the new ute - just waiting on the lead time so we know when it is coming. It may be a couple of weeks if we were quick enough to snag one of the two, in the colour we want, that were in stock at the manufacturer, if not a couple of months. There's been a run on electric vehicles in the past few months because some idiot started a pointless, unwinnable war in the Middle East.

YAY!
Thanks Penny! This "holiday" does nothing for me either, Linda!

Mr. SPH - wow... busy time down in CA for you. But at least there was some shower joy to temper the hospice sadness!

Larry- I''m not familiar with Lemon Oreos... they sound yummy!

Bill - glad you are all generator-protected now!

Rabbitz - I hope your new ute gets to your dealer soon! And yeah, from what I hear, EVs are selling like crazy due to the Orange Menace's fiasco. [smilie=hate.gif]
There are not enough charging places here to make me comfortable buying a full EV... but the hybrid I drove as a loaner was tempting...

Yeah, you and MsMod know for sure! When the discussion of hospice care first came up, (last year after the first ambulance ride/ER visit) two of the siblings were adamantly against it. MrsSPH is a retired RN and one of her sisters is an RN and so they are more pragmatic about such things and could clearly see the situation. This last episode brought the other siblings into reality and all agreed that it was time for hospice care. My MIL is a tough lady and only time will tell.....

I think MrsSPH's shower for our first born was her and maybe a dozen of her closest friends getting together at a local eatery for lunch and a some socialization, but that was about it. This weekend we're having a catered event for 45 people with people even flying in from New York!

Hello Buffettnews and happy Wednesday's eve!
Chips Ahoy is how I roll. I've never had another brand (other than the occasional Famous Amos) my entire life :D

My cookie list is as follows:

1. Keebler Fudge Strips
2. My very own sugar cookies
3. Chips Ahoy

HATE: Fig Newtons. I cannot tell why anyone likes them
Jerry...from Massachusetts. I'd like to go where it's warm! :D

We live a four or five hour drive from some of the best semi-arid and mallee-scrub camping in the country. Spectacular ranges and breathtaking views. The area is known as the Flinders Ranges. However there are exactly zero charging stations for hundreds of miles. That is why we decided on the hybrid. At least we can get petrol (gas) out there!

This is one of the station stays that we go to: https://mernmernastation.com.au/gallery/

Wow! It's a jam packed reading in the cafe with Hospice, utes, rain showers ,baby showers and a generator.
I shoveled in the ditches and I am shot. A T shirt I bought in 93 hit the trash. It wasn't worth washing. Ironically, it was before Buffett. The shirt had sharks on it.
If I wasn't fishing in this all day rain,I'd be home doing something stupid.
