I'm one of the original DIE HARD JIMMY BUFFETT FANS. My first intro was
in 1972 when I snuck into Liberty Hall to see JB. I was 17 years old at the time. I WAS HOOKED. This Guy was great. He sincerly loved his fans and LOVED what he was doing. His disinterest in the commercialism was also attractive. Last night, I took my daughter for her 18th birthday. I also took my digital camera to record our evening. Towards the end of the show, a security guard approached me about my taking pics of the crowd. We were on our way out anyway. As I approached the exit, I noticed there were two security guards behind us. They then DEMANDED that I release the camera so they could erase any and all pics. When I refused and said I was leaving, they called a sheriff and threatened to arrest me if I did not give them my camera. I again refused and then the sheriff responded that I could not leave until I complied. I was forced to erase ALL pics including some that had nothing to do with the concert. I understand not wanting people to pirate his image, but come on-this was supposed to be fun. I left with a bad taste in my mouth. The security staff in my opinion used strong arm tactics to enforce a rule that is carried to the extreme. Earlier in the show, I had approached these same security persons to ask them to deal with a person in front of use who was prevent several fans from seeing the show. He had a wide brim hat on and when I politly requested that he remove it so several people could see, i was told to F off....Hey I dont have a problem with the spectical of it all. That why we go. But to pay retail prices in the reserve seats and have to watch the show from the monitor is ridiculous. There ought to be a little more respect. OK, I know its a Buffett show, but if the security guards are going to be so aggressive in there tactics, then why don't they learn some better people skills.
Look for my record/cd collection on ebay. I'm done with JB. I just hope his lawyers don't try and sue me for selling his albums...

I hardly see what this has to do with JB, but if you want to take it out on him, go ahead I guess. A lot of times on the ticket (and if you call ahead) you can find out if cameras are allowed. If someone abuses this rule (law) then they ought to have to erase photos or give up the film. Sorry to disagree with you on that.

I do collect Jimmy's records, so I'll be looking for them on Ebay!

your lucky they didn't take the entire camera...no recording or photo devices means everything...I've seen people thrown out of shows for taking pictures...I've also seen people get warnings and were told just to put the camera away. It depends on who you're dealing with...sounds like security was just a little demanding last night. If you're willing to sell out your entire collection because you lost some pics, email me since I may be interested in buying some of your stuff....rules are rules for a reason, its even printed on some tickets now...if you get caught they can enforce the rules...if I sneak beer in and get caught they take that too but I am not going to give up on JB since I have to now buy $8 corona's on the inside...don't mean to flame, but your initial reaction on your first post seems a little drastic

...and advice to anyone else taking digital pics, get a bunch of small capacity cards and keep switching them...I have a bunch of 5 meg cards I bought for a few bucks each, that way if I get busted I delete one card and have a few memories packed away in my pocket they know nothing about

I agree, they do say no cameras, but hypothetically if someone were to try and bring in a camera what would be a good way of doing it. I know a "phriend" who was snagged at the gate and had to get rid of the camera, good thing it was a disposable camera. Just asking for a "phriend" of mine. Don't give up on JB though, how much does he really know what security is doing anyway. I'd be upset with the venue. Keep your fin up.

What kind of lesson are we teaching our children if the tickets specifically say no kind of recording device allowed and we sneek one in and then when we get caught we raise a fuss.

So is it now ok to steal or murder just as long as you don't get caught because that's the lesson being taught here. Anything's ok as long as you don't get caught. And when you do raise a fuss and act like a brat.

Strider ~ IMHO you're way outta line here with your attitude and the lesson you're teaching your keet is way off base.

I would encourage you not to give on Jimmy simply because of the actions of some security guard who worked the concert. It has been my experience that these guys take their job entirely too seriously. When their "orders" are not followed, they take personal offense and do one of two things: they get belligerent and assaultive; or they turn the situation over to legitimate authorities. As you didn't break any laws, I can't see how you could be compelled to delete your pictures. If I were working the venue (I, too, am a cop), I would have asked you to delete the pics. If you refused, you'd be politely escorted from the venue. But since you were leaving, it wouldn't have mattered! You'd still have your pics, and a fond memory of the show. Anyway, continue your parrothead-ism and don't let those guys get to you.

I don't know if I should say this or not but I have taken a camera into almost every concert I've been to. Not to take pics of Jimmy but to take pics of the crowd. And yes, citcat, the cleavage is a great way to get it in, that's how I've always done it! They can't legally pat you there!
And the one time I did get caught trying to get a camera in it was in my bag and they just told me to go put it back in my car or that they would hold it for me, but I didn't trust that, so you know what I did? I went and put in my bra and went on through!

You can try a disposable - if confiscated, no great loss. But make sure you have one just to bring inside... don't use that one for tailgating photos, 'cuz you would hate to lose any good shots already taken, like happened to our phriend here.

Strider - if you hold this against Jimmy, you're over-reacting. If he took it, then you could blame him, but you can't blame him for security doing what they're paid to do. You should have been more discreet knowing you were breaking the rules.

I've known of "Jimmy's people" actually snapping pictures using someone's camera once inside, so they're in the photos too. They're not the bad guys.

I can only hope you and your daughter had a great time up to that point. The guy with the big hat shouldn't have told you to f off, but it couldn't have been THAT big to obstruct the whole stage.

Call the venue before the show and ask if they allow cameras. It is usually up to the artist as to whether or not they are allowed and most allow small cameras and disposable cameras.

I go to the Gorge for a lot of concerts and the general rule is no cameras with detachable lenses (so you can add a telephoto once in) and no cameras with zoom lenses. This is getting harder to enforce with digital cameras. At a lot of the shows, if you are in some of the closer seats, the security people will escort you to the stage to take pictures.

As far as the security guards being jerks, that is something the venues control, not the artists. However, if you get caught breaking the rules, be prepared to live with the results. (Not that I ever break the rules, just something my mother taught me )

At the Atlanta (feb. 1) concert, I had to hand over my $500 camera. I did not relize that cameras were not allowed. After receiving my claim ticket, I enjoyed one hell of a show, and afterwards got my camera back. I wish I could have had a few shots for my PERSONAL collection, but after all, a rule is a rule and I respect that.

The security guards were inforcing the rules of the Cynthia Woods Pavillion, not Jimmy Buffett. I'm sure Jimmy had nothing to do with it, but I have heard him say at some of his smaller shows to please not to use flash cameras because it blinds the band.
Besides, it is a rule of the venue--go to their web site and see for yourself.

You took a chance and got caught.
Get over it.

I always get enough photos during the tailgate anyways.
I don't like to have the worry of sneaking something in that's not supposed to be....I want a worry-free fun time...
