7/11/2003 - Today Show NYC

Post by phjim »

The Today Show Summer Concert Series
Rockefeller Plaza NYC
July 11, 2003

Last night around 9 pm Jimmy mingled with the crowd that started gathering at Rockefeller Center and signed autographs. The rehersal / sound check was done at 6:00 am in the morning.

He played four songs on the Today Show:

1) The Weather is Here I wish you were Beautiful
2) Everybody's Talkin'
3) Cheeseburger in Paradise
4) Fins (not picked up by all TV stations)

If you went to the show, upload your pictures here (click on "Add Photos"):

UPDATE: MSNBC has four media clips from the Today Show (click on the arrow to go to the next clip). MSNBC also a good article on Parrothead and the show: "Living the life of a parrot head"

Has anyone ever gone when jimmy plays on the today show? If so how early does everyone recommend getting there to get a good spot. I work 2 blocks from there so I will go to the show and then off to work.

Two years ago, I got their about 11pm and their was maybe 100 people in front of us. Warm up will be about 5am with just the band and someone doing vocals after a while. If you go early and are worried about restrooms, the produce market at rockafeller center was dirty but accomidating.
I live in Toledo, Oh but hope to be present again ths year.

That's gonna be me - heading to work in my grass skirt! :) At least it'll be Casual Summer Friday. Did you get a straight on view or were you on one of the side streets? Behind Jimmy? My husband doesn't want to get there the night before and stand for hours (understandable, for he's not a PH at heart  ), so we're negotiating when to go. I'm trying to explain that we will need to get there at 11 the night before to make it worth it. What do you think?

TODAY SHOW

Well, if you were a Smart Woman in a Short Skirt, you'd get there as early as your Parrotthead Heart will allow!! "LOL"
Hanging w/a non-dedicated Parrotthead is a difficult task!
They just don't have that crazy zeal needed to do the crazy things we're required to do!! "LOL"
I always have Great Plans of being there at midnight and my lazy-a$$ (that's me, no one else) always lets me down!
I was so far away from Buffett & the Refers that I couldn't even see them!! :o And that was @ 5am!! 8)
Heard them well enough, I was 'stuck' right next to a speaker! :D
But he's really not up on a high enough stage!
NBC should set things up better!
And boy do they like it when we go nuts!! "LOL"
Catie gets such a 'kick' out of it all!!
Bring your Honey, bring a chair, bring some JB tunes, bring plenty of coffee (ahem, yeah!) and everyone at work will be jealous they hadn't gone themselves!!! :pirate:
Finz UP!! :wench:

I am working in the philly area and have a noon flight out of Philly on Friday the 11th. I may drive up to NY thursday evening. I am not all that familiar with the area so is it possible for me to catch the concert and then either drive or take a train back down to the philly Airport for a noon flight that Friday? Thanks for any help.

If you like to live life on the edge!!
It's a little too much for me, but remember, 'we ride the carosel for the stories we can tell'!! :D
Of course you can take AmTrak outta NYC to PA, but, time wise, I'd guess it would take an hour, but it would all depend what hour you can take!!
The show airs live at 7am.
He plays like 2x's during the whole show, and of course they play his tunes and do pans of the phans the whole while.
It was so 'ingrossing' to be there, that I hung for hours afterwards!!
It's a 'trip', standing shoulder to shoulder in a crowd of Parrottheads for HOURS, but if your a 'spongecake' for Parrotthead adventure, it's a must to put on your list!
It's almost like childbirth, you forget the pain-after a few Margaritas!!
Have PHun!

Thanks Tequila Shelia!
I think I've convinced my non-PH hubbie to take the Phriday off from w*rk, and I've already concocted the "doctor's appointment" so that I can arrive at noon... I think I will at least need to go home and shower after 8 hrs shoulder-to-shoulder w/ thousands of PHs. I think I'm going to try to show up at Rock Center around 2 am.
The whole staying up all night is fine with me - the real turn off is that they make you stand up!

I'm a fairly new parrot head....I'd say I joined the crew about a year and a half ago and I've been dying to see Jimmy ever since. This trip to NYC today show will be my first, but I have a problem. My wife is pregnant and its on her birthday. I really want her to go, but I don't know if she can do the hole standing up all night thing....does anyone know if they would make exceptions on letting seats in....I heard that once your in at @ 2:30 no one can sit down....also...will they let camcords and cameras in...thanks :pirate:

1st off Welcome, we're an easy-going crowd, your never alone when there's a Parrotthead in the house!
Geez, as much as YOU love JB, does she?!!!!
And it's HER birthday?
Personally, unless God himself (and that IS JB  ) gave me a private show, I'd wait until the 'keet came along and made it a family affair!
It's probably the most 'arduous' JB show I've ever been too! "LOL"
Unless she's only most recently prego's (and CONGRATULATIONS by the way! :D ) I'd rethink it!
"Someday I Will", maybe?
And I can't see them making any exceptions, but who knows, maybe if you had one of those director-type chairs that folded up into that carry-over-your-shoulder sleeve... That's what I hoped to bring, I have a lower disc problem myself.
Also, re:cams, when I was there in '01, pre-9/11, it was fine to bring cams, matter of fact a woman was there recording the concert for her son who was on his honeymoon! Now is that parental dedication?! "LOL" I took plenty of pics of the tall bldgs! You couldn't even see the stage unless you were there up close, in the corrals, which means you got there early, like the night before!
Listen, it's a great, arduous parrotthead adventure, but there are other venues to see JB that would be less taxing on wifey & 'keet in tow!
May the Finz be with you! :pirate:
Wishing you all the best life has to offer! 8)

My wife and I went in 2001. We went with a couple of friends and had a blast. It is still something that we talk about. We took many pictures. Time went by quite fast. We got there at about 11:00. They let you in at about 2:00-2:30. Then the band reherses at 5:00, playing 4-5 songs. Buffett joins them and reherses the same 4-5 songs at about 5:30. Then the News program airs at 7:00 and goes to 8:30. Buffett plays 4 songs spaning the last 1/2 hour, then we all go home.
By getting there by 11:00 we were about 20 yards from the stage.

Please Help……….

A couple of my friends and I are planning on driving down to NY tonight to see Jimmy on the Morning show tomorrow. This will be our first time doing this and we are a little in the dark on how everything works. For example, can we bring bagged chairs in with us so we can sit? More importantly, is there a place to go to the bathroom? Can you get your spot back if you go? What time should we get there?

If anyone can answer these questions, I sure would appreciate it. I do not want to be an unprepared parrothead……..

Thanks for your help parrotheads

There's TONS of well-seasoned parrotthead info in past posts! :o
Scroll thru and you'll have a pretty good idea!
Also, ever been in a subway?
It's sorta like that, except the longest ride in your life! :pirate:

I can't wait to get home and watch this. I was disappointed tho'. I was hoping he'd do Natives Are Restless or 5 O'Clock Somewhere so we could get a good recording of one (or both) of these songs. Of course that's probably why he didn't play them.

You can download 5:00 Somewhere off the Church of Buffett website (cobo.org). It's the version in Indy with Allen Jackson.
