Hello to all! Just wanted to let you all know that the Vinyl Kings {assorted ex-reefers who recorded and/ or toured in the old days with Mr. bu fay} have a new CD out for your dancing and dining pleasure. It is called "Time Machine" and can be made your very own at
http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/vinylkings2. It is a little different from the first "Beatle sounding" CD" A Little Trip" that we released in 2002. This one has Beatle overtones as well as Beach Boy sounding songs. And to make sure you're totally confused, a Marvin Gaye sounding tune as well. All are original songs written by your's truly and the other band member's. Although we are all grateful for what the big cheese has done for us, there are no Buffett sounding songs on this CD. Let's face it everybody else is jumping on that band wagon-no need for more. Anyway- would love to see and hear what you think of the music.

Perhaps you could offer us up a little "history lesson, history lesson?" For those of us who are historically challenged, would you mind to take a minute and explain who the other ex-Coral Reefers on the cd are, and their "place and time" in Coral Reefer history? Thanks-I hope I'm not the only one curious about such things...

It would be my pleasure!! I'll start with Vince Melamed who is in the band but not on this CD-long story} Vince played keyboards with Jimmy from 1982 -87 or 88 I believe. He and Utley were the keyboard guys back then. Vince was also the announcer for the Buffett shows back then-we had a taped intro on some shows. Every tour was something different back then, we'd even change every night sometimes. He's a very funny man. He co-wrote a song or two with JB too.
Next is Larry Lee, from the Ozark Mountain Daredevils-you know the voice of "Jackie Blue". He only toured for a year or two, taking Timothy B. Schmit's place in 84 or 85. Singing the high harmony parts. Back then Jimmy would leave the stage and let us do some of our songs for about a 1/2 hr. We'd do Dixie Chicken, Jackie Blue, some Club Triny and one of my songs. good fun!
Larry Byrom, Jim Photoglo and Harry Stinson never toured with Jimmy, but sang and played on acouple of Jimmys albums.
I toured with Jimmy from 1980-86 and was on Coconut Telegraph, Somewhere over China, One Particular Harbour, Last Mango in Paris, Floridays, & Boats, Beaches, Bars and Ballads. My most famous moment my well be getting my guitar chord caught while trying to duck walk across the stage in "Live by the Bay".
I co-wrote "Livin' it Up", Who's the Bonde Stranger, and "You;ll never work in dis Bidness again"

Slightly? SLIGHTLY?? I'd leave my husband for TS... In about 9 milliseconds... (but it's okay, because that was the only item in the verbal pre-nup, 20 years ago.... if Tom comes calling, I'm OUTTA HERE!!! )

Anyhow, ahem, and back on topic... Yes, it's a red Ferrari... No, although it's hard to tell, I'm not sitting in it. Brown Eyed Girl (Kathy) and I saw it in Calostoga, CA, when we went to Jeepgirl and Redwinemaker's wedding in August 03. We were going to ask to sit in it, but when the driver returned, he looked like a stuck-up a**h****, so we passed...

Now, I bet you can clear something up for me. Jimmy played at the Naval Academy in 1979 or 1980, and I've never been able to remember when it was. Did you play that show? Do you remember what year it was?? Thanks!

I don't remember what year-if it was 79 then chances are I didn't play it unles J.D. Souther opened the show? If he did, Then I was there as that's how I got the job with Jimmy, when I was in Souther's band, I used to sit in and Jam. If it was 80 then I was there, but you know playing with Bubba back then was dangerous for the brain cells! So I could have been there physically..........

I was there, but can't remember what year it was. I was hoping you'd either say, "Yes, I was there" or "Nope, not there" and I could have pinned it down once and for all. Unfortunately I don't remember whether J.D. Souther opened...

The Vinyl Kings are awesome. Their last album was an excellent trip down memory lane without sounding dated or cliche. Time Machine is also pretty good. I really suggest everyone check them out for a nice change of pace.

Josh White Overalls, it is great to have you here! Your history with the CRs gives you a unique insight.

As I have been listening to JB's music I am impressed with the really good instrumentals between verses. Does Jimmy usually write those instrumentals also? Or perhaps they are written by the musician who hopes to play them? How many people does he typically collaborate with on most songs?

I can only speak about my time in the band-Utley and Greenidge did almost all of it and Utley being the main guy. Mike is very talented and the major musical force behind Jimmy in my opinion. Needs to get more credit too.
