Mac & Me - my story

Well, since some of you asked me to tell it... Here's my brief, little story of meeting Mac McAnally Thanksgiving a year ago.

I told it to Beach Blonde in a PM last December, and she wanted me to post the whole story then, but I wanted to get the photo in my siggy first...

Now that is done, here is what I told Beach Blonde, who started the whole FREE MAC from Dollar Tree movement on Buffett News the summer of 2004, which got me into Mac's music in the first place.

Speaking of which, you have told me some of the story with you and Mac and FREE MAC.. but, tell me it all again.........

Thank you! It was an exciting moment.

Okay, it's not bedtime, but here's the whole story...

We were in Key West the week of Thanksgiving, to celebrate my hubby's 50th birthday. It was the day before Turkey Day, and I had just had a couple of margaritas with dinner at Margaritaville. I was out of practice, so I was already majorly s***-faced (That's why it is NOT a very good photo of me).

Then I read a letter on the wall near the entrance to the shop about JB's concert in at The Citadel in Charleston -- hubby and I had seen the letter in the first Margaritaville Store in 1987, and hadn't seen it since. SO, I was feeling really giddy. It was a letter from the Chancellor saying that Mr. Buffett would NEVER be invited to perform there again because of performing WDWGDAS.

Then, we stepped out the door to the street, and nearly ran into MAC MCANALLY! Actually he was about 15 feet away walking toward us. Nobody on the sidewalk even noticed him. So I yelled "It's MAC!" People stopped and looked, clueless, except for my hubby Frank, who hadn't seen him yet and thought I had lost it.

Mac seemed pleased to be recognized, came up to me to say hello and I babbled, "We love your music. We just got your CDs ... Dollar Tree... Free Mac ... Buffett News!"

He cocked his head at me like a friendly dog who hears a sound he'd never heard before. I was so surprised that I'd said that, that I didn't even explain and just asked if I could have a picture with him. And he said yes. He was just about to go into the restaurant.

He was accompanied by another guy who looked expectant, like we should have recognized him too. He did look very familiar. Later, we looked at lots of photos on the net and realized it was Bill Payne, the founder of Little Feat. I felt bad that I didn't ask him to pose for a photo, too. But I was fresh from the BN Free Mac thread Beach Blonde had started, so Mac was all I could think of.

Then two days later, on hubby's 50th birthday, we had breakfast at Pepe's and saw Mac and Bill Payne with about four other guys waiting for a table, and we were right behind them. I was so excited, but kept it cool...

Around 4 p.m. the same day, we saw Mac yet AGAIN outside Shrimpboat Sound recording studio as we walked by. Frank said, "He's going to think we're stalking him." So we stayed at a distance. Three Mac sightings in three days! It was a highlight of our trip.

Thanks again for asking... I agree with Mal, he IS a cutie-patootie, especially up close, and very sweet. Thanks, Mac, for the memory, and for all the wonderful songs. I love "It's my Job," and listening to you sing Coast of Carolina with Jimmy. :) And we are still enjoying your CDs, too!

You'd be embarrassed too if a half-drunk 40-something woman you didn't know yelled your name on a crowded Key West sidewalk... :o

or maybe not?

I was blushing... But I don't care! :D I was happy, as you can see!

If you've ever been to one of Mac's solo shows, he's a really funny guy. The stories between the songs are almost as good as the songs.

You mean the one where Jimmy was a jerk for not showing up and supporting his band-mate just because someone expected him to appear? :D

My bro is actually a dead ringer for another Mac, Mark McGwire... :D
