We always make the cheater kind with pillsbury biscuits......it's pretty good!
MONKEY BREAD
4 pkgs. Pillsbury rolls (not buttermilk)
1/2 c. sugar
1/4 c. cinnamon
1/2 lb. butter
2 tbsp. cinnamon
1/4 c. sugar
Chopped Pecans or Walnuts (about a cup)
Separate rolls and cut each into fourths. Combine 1/2 cup sugar and 1/4 cup cinnamon. Roll pieces in this mix. Melt butter and stir in 2 tablespoons cinnamon and 1/4 cup sugar.
Grease Bundt pan. Place half of biscuits in pan, then half of melted mixture, half of the chopped nuts then remaining biscuits, remaining melted mixture and remaining nuts. Bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees. Turn over pan and eat while warm. Pull apart with fingers.

awesome, that's what I was looking for with the biscuits. We actually had a family open a monkeybread place on the boardwalk here a couple years ago. They top them with cream cheese frosting.

I didn't know there was any other way to fix Monkey Bread than with canned biscuits...

Gorilla Bread (Monkey Bread's cousin)
1/2 c. granulated sugar
3 t. cinnamon
1/2 c. butter
1 c. packed brown sugar
1 8 oz. pkg. cream cheese
2 12 oz. can refrigerated biscuits
1 1/2 c. chopped nuts (pecans or walnuts)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a bundt pan with nonstick spray. Mix the granulated sugar and cinnamon. In a pan, melt butter and brown sugar over low heat, stirring well; set aside. Cut the cream cheese into 20 equal cubes. Press the biscuits out with your fingers and sprinkle each with 1/2 t. cinnamon sugar. Place cream cheese cube in the center of each biscuit, wrapping and sealing the dough around the cream cheese. Sprinkle 1/2 c. of the nuts into the bottom of the bundt pan. Place half of the prepared biscuits in the pan. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar, pour half of the melted butter mixture over the biscuits, and sprinkle on 1/2 c. of nuts. Layer the remaining biscuits on top, sprinkle with the remaining cinnamon sugar, pour the remaining butter mixture over the biscuits, and sprinkle with the remaining 1/2 c. of nuts. Bake for approx. 50 min. Remove from oven and cool for 5 min. Place plate on top and invert.
Some people put chocolate kisses in the biscuits instead of cream cheese.

I'm eating Hawaiian bread this afternoon... Just made spinach dip for a back-to-school cook-out with friends, and scooped out the bread bowl to put it in. It's yummy!

My grandma used to make monkey bread with loafs of frozen bread....I don't have a recipe, but I'm guessing its not much different the version with biscuits.
I had forgotten all about this until seeing this thread....I'll have to whip up a batch one of these weekends.

The first time I had it was in a city in the south. However I have also seen it sold in stores here in the Seattle area.

Think of it as a Southern cousin to the sticky cinammon bun. You have just gained a half pound reading this.
(FYI, I'm scooting this into the Recipes and Boat Drinks forum).
