At 12:50am, Coral Reefer Band percussionist Ralph MacDonald lost his battle with lung cancer. Thank you to Ralph for decades of great music,

Sail on, Ralph.

My wife and I had the pleasure of spending about 20 minutes chatting with Ralph backstage in Raleigh in 2009. Truly one of the kindest, gentlest souls we have ever met. He remembered seeing us at the Beachbomber event earlier in that year and we talked about everything from music to family and kids. I had mentioned that both of our boys (5 and 7 at the time) liked music and that our 5 year old even had a small drum set, he really smiled and said how great it was to kids kids involved in music. Two days earlier, we had taken the kids to the Charlotte show and even pointed Ralph out just before he cut loose during the breakdown in "Brown Eyed Girl".

As we said our goodbyes and turned to walk away, he turned back and said 'Please tell your boys that I said 'hello'", which was awesome!

RIP Ralph, you will be missed.

Thank you, Uncle Jim, for sharing this wonderful story through your blog. How wonderful to hear that Ralph was comforted by music and enjoyed watching the Coral Reefer Band concert at this year's Meeting of the Minds. What a wonderful tribute!

And there's that one particular harbour
Sheltered from the wind
Where the children play on the shore each day
And all are safe within

Sail on, Ralph...
