***To all Jokelben server users***
The server is back up and running again. Thursday night Bobtu the owner of the server discovered that someone had been on the server converting shows from MP3 format which is the format most if not all of the shows are in, to m4a format. The m4a format is the format associated with Apple IPod's and other apple related products. Bobtu decided to restore the mp3 formats using his back-up copy of the server files when the entire server crashed during Bobtu's restoration effort. Bobtu contacted the hosting company and was told that they were working on restoring the server. It is now back up and running at this point
The conversion of the show files is now the second instance in the last 6 weeks or of problematic use of the server. A few weeks ago I discovered that a number of odd and unusual files had been uploaded to the server. I contacted Bobtu to let him know and he checked out the uploads which were a large amount of viruses and malware files. After Bobtu cleaned the viruses off of the server he decided to change the password for ftp access to the server.
It is important to remember that having the Jokelben server and it's vast library of Jimmy Buffett shows is both an honor and privilege that should be respected by all. If you want the show files in a file format other then mp3 simply ask on the concert trading forum here at Buffettnews and someone like myself or Sunlover will gladly help you out in showing you how to go about converting the files.
I for one have believed for a long time that the "P" in Parrothead stands for Peace and or Peaceful which if adhered to will keep things like Jokelben around for a long time.

Great to know! I just wonder why anyone would need to convert the files to m4a. I could understand making content available in multiple formats, but it really isn't necessary. Apple products can play mp3 just as easily. I avoid using proprietary formats such as m4a (Apple) or wmv (Windows). The mp3 format is universal in the sense that any media player can open these files.
We have to remember that BNers are not the only users of the FTP sites. A quick google search of "jokelben ftp server" comes up with a couple hundred hits. With that many results, the logon info can circulate pretty quickly. This is one reason why I post the logon info as a graphic instead of text within the forums. It's less likely the graphic will come up in a search.
I know the last couple shows are missing from the server. I will upload those later today.
@Bobtu: A quick question for you. What kind of online connection do you have that allows you to do such a quick restore of so much content? Are you on cable broadband? I know my host has a limit on how much content they would backup and I'm definitely over that limit. Just curious...

Thanks for all your work to keep this boat sailing during rough waters and hurricanes.
I know everyone here appreciates your efforts.
Why do people do these things? Just makes no sense to me.

Re: Jokelben server is back up
Hi Everyone,
Been a long time fan of Jimmy's. Visited the different boards, and also have loved being able to download. I echo that it is awesome that there a repository where anyone can go. When the server was unavailable some time ago I thought it may be gone and never come back. I downloaded the entire ftp in drips and drabs over time. I would be honored to help host a copy of the ftp. I have a pretty healthy connection to the internet due to work and a raided ftp server. I wanted to put it out there, I absolutely do not want to steal anyone's thunder. I feel that the data should be preserved because unfortunately the Senior Parrothead is not going to be around for ever...
Thanks,
DJ
